​INTERVIEW

 (EN) Nothing in her youth indicates that Verona Verbakel will become an actress. She is shy and her parents think it makes sense for her to continue her studies. Verona perseveres and goes to Studio Herman Teirlinck. But as a recently graduated actress, she sometimes ends up at 'debatable' castings. She incorporates those experiences into The audition.

And there are quite a few, because Verona (25) has been auditioning since she was 11. Over the years she has experienced all kinds of striking (and frustrating) situations, in Flanders and elsewhere in Europe. When she was on the film set with British screenwriter Terence Davis and at the same time received an invitation to audition for a reality TV show, she knew for sure: she would pour the absurd situations in which she found herself as a young, unknown actress in an entertaining monologue. The common thread is rejection, and that makes it recognizable to everyone. Verona sees the humor in the tragedy: “Actually, I like that people can laugh at my misery, then it serves a purpose. Playing this is a bit of sweet revenge.”
 
CHARACTER HEAD
Criticism at auditions is often about appearance. “Sometimes they just say they don't like you. Or that they are looking for a character head. Or that you don't physically fit your co-star. Of course there are many things involved, you can also be refused because the role has already been promised to someone else or because the producer does not know you.” This young woman, blessed with good looks, has undoubtedly also experienced sexist things. “The focus is not on that, but it is interwoven throughout the piece. To what extent do you sell yourself? Do you put your personality aside for a particular project because you think the director is looking for something else? As I get older I don't take on every project anymore. I've also learned as an actor that you can't please everyone, there will always be people who don't like your work or your style.”

NAKED SPIDER
By making this piece, Verona has learned that you should never take criticism personally, even if they attack you from head to toe. “Somehow I am proud that I was able to do so many auditions. If you have connections in the film and theater world, you don't end up in the caverns where I ended up several times.” Now she can laugh about it and she is happy that she was able to let the criticism go. “If you think about it too often, you'll end up in a mental institution.”
Arguably the strangest assignment Verona was given at an audition was to play a naked spider. But the worst she experienced was when her monologue in a musical was discussed in class. What did Verona do wrong? Was she talking too quietly? Wasn't she watching the audience enough? No, said the director, Verona talks like she's sucking a horse's dick.
She was 12. Verona, an innocent child who still played with Lego, was devastated. The performance includes a scene in which Verona literally tells what she was once asked to do at an audition for a role as a groupie. Because of this scene, the performance was labeled 16+. “What I did then, I only just now dared to tell my mother. Oh, I was so naive.”
 
VERY SHY
Why is she so eager to get involved in the acting world? Actually, she ended up here by accident. Her mother found Saturday afternoon childcare convenient and enrolled her and her sister in a musical. “We had to audition. I was very shy as a child, so I begged my sister not to go, to no avail. Only my sister was cast, but she insisted that I also participate. Once in, it turned out that she hated it, but I thought it was fantastic.”
Verona then ended up at the Kopergietery, a theater house in Ghent that sets up workshops for young people. When she was 16, she was allowed to replace someone at Ontroerend Goed. With Once and for all we're gonna tell you who we are and shut up and listen she was on stage in Montreal, Melbourne, Sydney, L.A. and Toronto and even on Broadway. Afterwards she also played in the youth performance Teenage Riot by Ontroerend Goed. “That was a good preparation, I did not enter the conservatory barefaced.”

CRAZY EXPERIENCE
During her studies, Verona played in Sirens by Ontroerend Goed and The depth of the valley by Dimitri Leue and Warre Borgmans. She recently appeared in A Quiet Passion by Terence Davis, “a super-sized production, with Cynthia Nixon, a really crazy experience” and soon you can spot her in the series The Flemish Bandits. And there is still a lot in the pipeline: “With De Mannschaft we are reprising LIV, a play about a girl with cancer. From April I will be on the set of Cold Light, a film by Michael Van den Eynde with Clara Cleymans and Joren Seldeslachts. After that I will work with The Hotshop/De Warme Winkel on the second part about Wagner.”

POEMS
How does the 25-year-old from Ghent see the future? Does she mainly want to do film or theater work? “I'm more attracted to film now. I am now aware that as an actor you have to create your own work. It is important to make your own choices and to stay creative. Between two assignments I write poems, that keeps me awake. You must define yourself as an actress by the work you do, you must not seek approval from others. I used to do that and that's why it hit me hard when I didn't get a part. An audition isn't necessarily a bad one if you don't get the part. Sometimes other things ensue. And it's not a race. I'd rather work once a year with someone like Brian De Palma (Verona had a supporting role in the movie Domino) from whom you can steal with your eyes than spend a year on a well-paid but unchallenging project."

 (NL) Niets in haar jeugd wijst erop dat Verona Verbakel actrice zal worden. Ze is verlegen en haar ouders vinden het logisch dat ze verder studeert. Verona volhardt en gaat naar Studio Herman Teirlinck. Maar als pas afgestudeerde actrice komt ze wel eens op ‘foute’ castings terecht. Die ervaringen verwerkt ze in De auditie.

En dat zijn er heel wat, want Verona (25) doet al audities sinds haar 11de. Doorheen de jaren maakte ze allerlei frappante (en frustrerende) situaties mee, in Vlaanderen en elders in Europa. Toen ze op de filmset stond met de Britse scenarioschrijver Terence Davis en tegelijk een uitnodiging kreeg om auditie te doen voor een reality tv-show, wist ze het zeker: ze zou de absurde situaties waarin ze als jonge, onbekende actrice terechtkwam in een onderhoudende monoloog gieten. De rode draad is afwijzing, en dat maakt het herkenbaar voor iedereen. Verona ziet de humor in de tragiek: “Eigenlijk vind ik het leuk dat mensen met mijn miserie kunnen lachen, dan dient het toch voor iets. Dit spelen is toch een beetje zoete wraak.”

KARAKTERKOP
Vaak gaat kritiek bij audities over uiterlijk. “Soms zeggen ze gewoon dat ze je niet mooi vinden. Of dat ze op zoek zijn naar een karakterkop. Of dat je niet past bij de tegenspeler. Er speelt natuurlijk vanalles mee, je kan ook geweigerd worden omdat de rol al aan iemand anders is beloofd of omdat de producent je niet kent.” Deze jonge vrouw, gezegend met goede looks, heeft ongetwijfeld ook seksistische dingen meegemaakt. “De focus ligt daar niet op, maar het zit wel in het hele stuk verweven. In hoeverre verkoop je jezelf? Schuif je voor een bepaald project je persoonlijkheid aan de kant omdat je denkt dat de regisseur naar iets anders op zoek is? Met het ouder worden neem ik niet meer alles aan. Ik heb ook geleerd dat je als acteur niet iedereen kan pleasen, er zullen altijd mensen zijn die je werk of je stijl niet fijn vinden.”

NAAKTE SPIN
Door het stuk te maken heeft Verona geleerd dat je de kritiek nooit persoonlijk mag nemen, zelfs al kraken ze je van top tot teen af. “Ergens ben ik trots dat ik zoveel audities heb mogen doen. Als je connecties hebt in de film- en theaterwereld kom je niet terecht in de krochten waar ik meermaals belandde.” Nu kan ze er mee lachen en is ze blij dat ze de kritiek over zich heen heeft kunnen laten gaan. “Als je er te vaak bij stilstaat, beland je in de psychiatrie.”
De vreemdste opdracht die Verona op een auditie kreeg, was ongetwijfeld een naakte spin spelen. Maar het ergste dat ze meemaakte was toen haar monoloog in een musical klassikaal werd besproken. Wat deed Verona fout? Praatte ze te stil? Keek ze niet genoeg naar het publiek? Nee, zei de regisseur, Verona praat alsof ze een paard pijpt.
Ze was 12. Verona, een onschuldig kind dat nog met Lego speelde, was er kapot van. In de voorstelling zit een scène waarin Verona letterlijk vertelt wat haar ooit is gevraagd op een auditie voor een rol als groupie. Door deze scène kreeg de voorstelling het label 16+. “Wat ik toen heb gedaan, durfde ik pas nu aan mijn moeder te vertellen. Ach, ik was zo naïef.”

HEEL VERLEGEN
Waarom wil ze toch zo graag in de acteerwereld meedraaien? Eigenlijk belandde ze hier per toeval. Haar moeder vond opvang op zaterdagmiddag handig en schreef haar en haar zus in voor een musical. “We moesten auditie doen. Ik was als kind erg verlegen, dus ik smeekte mijn zus om niet te gaan, tevergeefs. Enkel mijn zus werd toegelaten, maar die stond erop dat ik ook mocht meedoen. Eenmaal daar bleek dat zij het haatte, maar ik vond het fantastisch.”
Daarna kwam Verona terecht bij de Kopergietery, een Gents theaterhuis dat ateliers voor jongeren inricht. Toen ze 16 was, mocht ze iemand vervangen bij Ontroerend Goed. Met Once and for all we're gonna tell you who we are and shut up and listen stond ze op de planken in Montreal, Melbourne, Sydney, L.A. en Toronto en zelfs op Broadway. Nadien speelde ze ook mee in de jongerenvoorstelling Teenage Riot van Ontroerend Goed. “Dat was een goede voorbereiding, ik kwam niet barefaced op het conservatorium terecht.”

ZOTTE ERVARING
Tijdens haar studies speelde Verona mee in Sirens van Ontroerend Goed en De diepte van het dal van Dimitri Leue en Warre Borgmans. Onlangs was ze nog te zien in A Quiet Passion van Terence Davis, “een supergrote productie, met Cynthia Nixon, echt een zotte ervaring” en binnenkort kan je haar spotten in de serie De Bende van Jan de Lichte. En er zit nog heel wat in de pijplijn: “Met De Mannschaft hernemen we LIV, een stuk over een meisje met kanker. Vanaf april sta ik op de set van Koud licht, een film van Michael Van den Eynde met Clara Cleymans en Joren Seldeslachts. Daarna ga ik met De Warme Winkel samenwerken aan het tweede deel over Wagner.”

GEDICHTEN
Hoe ziet de 25-jarige Gentse de toekomst? Wil ze vooral film- of theaterwerk doen? “Ik voel me nu meer aangetrokken tot film. Ik ben me er nu bewust van dat je als acteur je eigen werk moet creëren. Het is belangrijk om je eigen keuzes te maken en creatief te blijven. Tussen twee opdrachten door schrijf ik gedichten, dat houdt mij wakker. Je moet jezelf als actrice definiëren door het werk dat je doet, je mag de goedkeuring niet bij anderen halen. Dat deed ik vroeger en daarom raakte het me ook hard als ik een rol niet kreeg. Een auditie is niet per se slecht geweest als je de rol niet hebt. Soms vloeien er andere dingen uit voort. En het is geen race. Liever één keer per jaar samenwerken met iemand als Brian De Palma (Verona had een bijrol in de film Domino) van wie je kan stelen met je ogen, dan een jaar lang op een goedbetaald maar weinig uitdagend project te zitten."
